Fire and Ice

Last night the Twin Cities Photography Group Inc. organized an event with the Fire Jam Dancers. It was a blast - but there is much to learn. The moving flame illuminates the performer, but the light is very finicky - it ebbs and flows and moves to unexpected places. The only hope (for me) is to shoot it like the fireworks: manual focus using live view, then play with exposure to get the faces lit but not blurry. For instance this has been shot in 1/8s at f/1.4 (ISO 100).
You could try using a second curtain sync strobe to freeze the movement at the end but the light moving in close proximity of the performer will lit her enough to generate visible blur: Here is a selection of the photos taken by other participants.

Dynamic Photography Meetup @ St. Paul Cathedral

Yesterday there was a photo meet-up at St. Paul Cathedral. It was nice that we were allowed to use tripods -- I set the ISO at 100, aperture at 11 and only adjusted exposure using the histogram. By mid-afternoon, sun was peeking through and casting a dramatic light on St. Luke's statue: Steve got a really nice shot of the same statue.

Fernandosson

Ferndando's son was full of energy at last night's samba party hosted by Alex and Darcia.

In the Shadows

This morning, there was a brief glimpse of the sun, that projected an interesting shadow of the Oncidiums:

A visit to the Museum

It's still cold and dreary outside (although today there was a bit of sun breaking through the clouds). To stretch my legs I invited a friend to visit the Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts . I was liked the paintings, but was not particularly impressed by the large Diana paintings. My favorite was "Venus Anadyomene" - and I could not resist a chuckle at the docent's comment that the shell that Venus sailed onto the shore was not 'rendered to size' or words to that effect. The exhibition was obviously closed to photography, but on the hallway leading to the gallery, I spotted an old friend, the "Veiled Lady" by Raffaelo Monti:
We ventured for a bit in the modern art section and got away with an interesting perspective on Mona Hatoum's 2008 "Cube":
